PCGamerBike

Imagine setting your students the task of riding an Olympic Course virtual track or riding through the Grand Canyon on Google Earth!

The PCGamerBike is a compact exercise bike that directly interacts with PC games. Your pedal motion precisely controls your character motion in the game. Pedal forward to move your character forward, pedal reverse to move your character backward. Just plug your PCGamerBike into a USB port and it's ready to go.

PCGamerBike can be used to play any PC game that uses a keyboard for input.

Exercise can be fun!  Athletes playsports.  They don't focus on how hard it is to run down the field.  They're thinking about how to make the next score.  Their increased heart rate and raised endorphin levels make the experience more exciting.  It's the same when using the PCGamerBike to play PC games.  Your mind is so focused on winning the race, making the score, chasing the bad guy or a thousand other scenarios, that you really don't think about the exercise you are getting.

During the 2008/2009 Games in Learning Exergaming Project Hannaford State School used the PCGamer bike and reported the following key findings:

  • Using the exergaming equipment made physical activity fun and appealing to all students especially to those who can be at times reluctant to engage in activities (self-conscious).
  • The bikes provided a quality alternative to outdoor physical activities when conditions were adverse (extremely hot, wet, unbearable amounts of prickles/burrs).
  • Exergaming provided a way for students to use some of their Mathematical skills such as recording measurements, times, ordinal numbers, scores, etc. It showed a real-life application for knowledge and skills they had been learning or will be learning. It has great cross-curricular application potential.
  • Even the younger students became competent at taking their pulse.
  • The games played with the exergaming bikes were also useful for for Literacy. The students look at characters and their representations, stereotypes, settings and how the game uses these elements to influence and attract specific users to specific games.
  • The games played with the exergaming bikes were also useful for for The Arts. Students focused specifically on Media elements used in game produtions including interpretation of images, differences between image production, use of colour and use of camera angles and how these vary across different games.
  • The teacher reported that, "the students have gained physical fitness, confidence, resilliance, better turn-taking and team work/co-operation skills, organisational skills and more knowledge in using the equipment".

XRGame Action's Dance Mat Game Solutions

American schools who introduced DDR systems had kids lining up at the school gym door waiting eagerly to take part in their PE class.

American DDR study participants’ parents reported that most children stopped gaining their typical three or four pounds a month and, with increased self-confidence, started exercising and playing sports regularly in daily life. (Brubaker, 2006).

Based on the positive results of studies 765 public schools in West Virginia have “Dance Dance Revolution” games and dance mats available for students from elementary to high school to play before and after school, as well as part of physical education classes.  Due to the success of the program in West Virginia DDR is now being incorporated in schools in many States across America.

Nintendo Wii

Playing video games used to be a sedentary pastime, but now a growing number of games are compelling us to get up and move.  These games, often referred to as “exergames” involve the player in dance, aerobics, martial arts, sports moves or other forms of physical activity as a way to interact with the game.

XRGame action has searched the globe for the best quality, most physically interactive games and equipment, offering exergaming  solutions for people of all ages and abilities.

One of our favourite controllers, Nintendo Wii has revolutionised game play with new handheld controllers that require players to use actual physical movement to manipulate game action.   Some of the latest releases that will get you up and moving are:

Getting fit has never been this much fun!  GameBike is a fully loaded exercise bike with two BIG differences.  It plugs into a video game console and it has a steering mechanism that allows the rider to navigate the terrain of the game.  This means that the rider is a participant in the games.  The faster they pedal and the more steering skills they have, the better they score.
